Tom's dad...I have only good memories of you...I learned computers from your house, you were so "hip" and just always made me feel welcome, no matter what...Your son is a perfect legacy of you...I appreciate you, your uniqueness, your acceptance...you influenced me in many ways, wish I would have had the chance to let you know that, but in some ways I know you did :) Thank you for being who you were!

I first met Dr. Feil as a student at Mansfield University. He was one of the first professors that had a direct impact in my college career. He made class enjoyable at the time and memorable for a lifetime. He encouraged me and pushed me to learn not only what was in the text books, but what was in life. He also sponsored me for the Harrisburg Internship semester in the spring of 1998 where I had been selected to intern if the governors policy office under then Governor Tom Ridge. He was truly an inspiration in learning and even after his retirement from Mansfield continued to take classes and interact with the University and the Community. He will be missed.

What I will remember about Prof. Feil is his enthusiasm for people and learning. As a grad student, he asked me to be a TA for a stats class--I had no confidence in myself but he did and that made quite a difference in my life. You will be missed, Prof. Feil.

I don't usually write on obituary sites as get horribly stuck for something to say when someone passes. But when I looked at that picture of Dick, with the question "Your Thoughts" beside it, I had to smile. What do I think when I think of Dick Feil? Hmmm...I guess I think of a man who wasn't afraid to be himself. I think of his Cadillac, his wife (who I feel like I know just from listening to him talk), I think of a storyteller, a teacher, a mentor, a humanist, occasionally a wise cracker, and above all, a friend. Most of all, when I think of Dick, I think of the word 'ARTIST'. In his heart of hearts, creation was his true calling and he embraced that later in life as something that had simply just been a part about him from the beginning. I always loved waiting for the explanation of his artwork in class because you could always guarantee that whatever you were thinking was simply not going to be the case!lol. He had a purpose for everything he created and was unsolicited in his response to the question "and what would you like to share about YOUR piece, Dick?". Dick had many opinions, and whether I agreed with them all or not, I always had to agree with his reasoning behind his point. He was a human being with such a presence that no one who ever met him would soon forget. Dick was one who helped to teach me not to fight being a bit different, but rather to ride the wave and that it will always take me where I need to be. I've always loved his artworks...whether they were beautiful, funny, thoughtful or shocking ...they always made me smile and think. Dick was good at generating thought in others and he truly welcomed all responses. The MU art department will never be the same without him. He was an expected classmate in every art class! I guess that one could compare Dick to a piece of artwork himself, as he was truly a one of a kind creation! Although I will sadly miss sharing art space with him, he has left with me fond memories of time spent gluing, drilling, painting, sawing, sculpting and talking--- about nothing, about something, and about everything! Dick left with us the lesson that it's never too late to become everything that you've always wanted to be. As he DEFINITELY was...and more. No good byes from this chick to you, Mr. Feil...as you will always be in many of my BEST stories about my MU art experience...you will not be forgotten for the lives that you've touched. Thank you for always being you!

Dr. Feil was the professor at MU who influenced me most. As a professor, he was a wonderful blend of insightful, demanding, and compassionate, and had a quirky sense of humor that resonated with my own. I enjoyed every class I had with him. I am very happy to have run into him one last time this Fall (after over 20 years) at the hospital at Sayre, and to have been able to say hello and good-bye one last time. I am glad to have been able to call him a friend, and he most certainly will be missed. -- Annika Miller

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I think of Dick fondly when I remember my childhood and camping with both of our families together at Hills Creek. It was a great time. He continued to be a terrific colleague, and it was fun watching him enjoy retirement with a flurry of activity! My heart goes out to his family and our thoughts will be with them. --Sue and Joel Young and kids
