Obituary of Robert Clayton Putt
Robert Clayton Putt, age 85, of Mansfield, PA, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at his home. He was born on January 5, 1938 in Clearfield, PA, a son of Francis and Hazel (Marsh) Putt. Robert graduated from CFA in 1956 and then married his classmate Ann McOmber in 1958. He completed his B.S. degree in 1960 at SUNY Geneseo. From 1960 to 1963, he taught in the Corning School District and Ann and him began raising their two daughters. During his tenure in Corning, he did graduate work through Cornell University and SUNY Cortland. They then moved to Fredonia, NY where he was a faculty member of SUNY Fredonia. His MS degree was earned while at Fredonia, and he received his principal's license and his Reading Specialist certificate there also.
Mansfield, PA became their home in 1967 when he was employed as a Supervisor of Student Teaching at Mansfield State College. The college soon became Mansfield University. For several years, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses and served as assist chairman. He also taught continuing education classes for Mansfield and Penn State University. His doctorate in Education was earned in 1977 at Penn State. During that time, he was a professor at Mansfield and published several professional articles, acted as a consultant to local schools, and published 2 books. Working With Student Teachers was published nationally. The book A Basic Guide to Reading Instruction was marked nationally and internationally.
During the last 13 years at Mansfield University, he served as Chairman of the Education Department. In 1999, he retired after almost 40 years in the field of education and was granted status as professor Emeritus. He enjoyed digital photography, working on the computer, health and fitness, working on 3 collectible sports cars, playing the trombone, and spending time with his family.
Robert is survived by his wife; two daughters, Debra Payne of Mansfield, PA, and Amy (Gary) Mosher of Wellsboro, PA; three grandchildren, Brandon Payne, Ashley (Stephen) Marcin, and Ryan Mosher; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Putt; and a son-in-law, Scott Payne.
Friends and family are invited to call on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from 11:30am to 1:00pm at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 637 S. Main St. Mansfield, PA. A funeral service will follow at 1:00pm with Pastor Ed Siddle officiating. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery in Mansfield, PA.
