Obituary of Omer R. Sumner
Omer Roy Sumner, age 88, of Mansfield, PA, died Monday, January 21, 2013 at Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center, Wellsboro, PA. Omer was born August 8, 1924 at home in Lambs Creek, PA, son of Omer R. and Matilda (Dockweiler) Sumner. Orphaned at age 5, he grew up cared for by siblings, Bernice, Ruth, Esther, Ralph, Robert, Ray and Dick, who have all predeceased him. His niece, Marie (Cleveland) Cummings, who he grew up with and considered as a sister, recently predeceased him.
During World War II, Omer enlisted in the Army with his best friend, Jack Bastian. Omer fought on many fronts, and was wounded two times. Upon returning home, he met and married his beloved wife, Genevieve Betty VanZile, who died October 6, 2012. Omer worked 31 years at Westinghouse Corp. He loved his friends and family very much and enjoyed trips to many places in the U.S.
Survived by son, Gary L. Sumner; daughter, Brenda S. Meaker, son-in-law, J.R. Meaker; granddaughter, Laura (Marcus) Oueddir; great grandchildren, Ayman, Lily, and Zachariah Dean; special niece, Joyce Howey, and former daughter-in-law, Gwen Freeman.
Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, January 25, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 637 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. David E. Blowers officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield, PA. Memorial contributions may be made in Omers memory to the Mansfield Ambulance Assoc., 381 S.
