Obituary of Lloyd George Cummings

Type Obit Here Lloyd G. Cummings, age 82, of Tioga, PA, died on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, PA. He was born on November 12, 1923 in Tioga, PA, a son of the late Earl D. and Myrtie (Stratton) Cummings. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife Jerry Lee Cummings. Lloyd was a 1941 graduate of the Tioga Consolidated High School. He entered the army on November 30, 1944. Lloyd completed field artillery training from December 18, 1944 to April 14, 1945. After satisfactorily completing parachute school, he was rated on June 1, 1945 as a qualified parachutist. He was on Okinawa, prepared to jump into Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered He was with the 11th Airborne Division in the occupation of Japan, where he was qualified as a gliderist, and later completed the air transportability course. While in Japan, he studied Judo and eventually was awarded a black belt. He completed leadership school, jumpmaster-pathfinder school and was awarded the jumpmasters certificate. He was assigned to the 82nd airborne division with the 456 field artillery, and was later discharged in July of 1953 as a Sergeant First Class. On August of 1956, he enlisted in the army reserve, and was discharged as a Master Sergeant in January of 1961 to be promoted to Warrant Office W-1 in January of 1964, he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer W-2. Lloyd served in Vietnam from April 1970 to March 1971, receiving the bronze star medal. Later, in 1972, Lloyd led a team which instructed the Philippine army to a repair parts specialist course, and received a letter of commendation in February of 1973 he received the Philippine Honorary Master Parachutist Badge. He was awarded a certificate of achievement for outstanding service as the officer in charge of the supply section of the 539th engineer detachment (special forces) from July 1971 to December 1973, stationed on Okinawa. Lloyd retired as a Chief Warrant Officer W-3 in September of 1976. He was a founding member of the Sergeant Christopher M. Pusateri Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association (all airborne). Lloyd is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Connie Cummings of York, PA, a brother and sister-in-law Col. Eldon L. and Maria del Carmen Cummings of Middlebury Center, PA, three granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by five brothers; Minor, Warren, Edward, Earl, Charles Gurd Cummings and two sisters; Matie Cummings and Irene Maston. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, September 25, 2006 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Jacquelyn A. Buckheit Funeral Chapel, Crematory & Monuments, PC 637 S. Main St. Mansfield, PA. A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 6 PM at the First Baptist Church Of Tioga, Church St. Tioga, PA. Burial will be in Middlebury Union Cemetery, Middlebury Twp.
