Living in Delaware, Brian was not my former teacher who lived next door. However, I visited Brian many times when I travelled to Wellsboro making a detour to Mansfield to see him. Brian enjoyed eating at Perkins restaurant, so we always met there to share a meal together. I was always concerned that he wasn’t eating well, so getting a good meal into him was a good thing to do. My last visit with Brian was on December 21, 2023. I asked Brian if he would attend my 50th class reunion; begrudgingly, he consented with the caveat… “if I live that long.” Brian Stahler was excessively humble about the man he was to the students who loved and admired him. I told him this every time I saw him: “Brian, you’re the best educator I ever had in my life.” Brian Stahler was a legend; he would be the first to deny it. But, there was no denying the truth. Brian suffered from kidney failure and had to travel to Wellsboro three times a week for dialysis; thank goodness he had a kind and caring caretaker. Dialysis was hard on Brian as it is on most dialysis patients. From the last time I saw him, his health declined rapidly until March 1st. The attached picture is Brian on December 21, 2023, as we were leaving Perkins. In parting that day, Brain said to me: “I love you” because he was grateful for my visits. I am grateful he was my teacher.

We will miss Brian Stahler. Mr. Stahler first was a student teacher when I was in ninth grade, and then my English teacher in 11th. He taught us so much, but more importantly he taught us to go beyond what we thought we could do. I remember his walking into class in September and writing 11 book titles on the board and said they had to be read before Christmas break. Most of us read all 11 books and this was beyond the regular literature. He inspired me to major in English and later become an English teacher and then a high school principal ( his push that you can do more than you think possible.) Rest in peace Brian Stahler, teacher, mentor and friend.

There are no words to adequately explain the influence that Brian had on my life and career as a teacher. I was fortunate to first student teach with Betty Morrow at the junior high school, the person with whom Brian had once student taught, but I was still very wet behind the ears when I entered his classroom in the fall of 1978. He pushed me, challenged me, and inspired me with his enthusiasm and devotion to his craft. I still had much to learn when my experience with him ended, but he put me on the path to a career that I loved, and I think I grew to be a good teacher. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time in his classroom, and I envied those students who attended the high school and benefited from the most talented, knowledgeable, and passionate educator I have ever known. I offer my condolences to his sons (I met you when your lovely mother and father invited me to dinner one time, but you won’t remember as you were so young) and l pray that God blesses Brian with eternal rest.

Mr. Stahler inspired me to major in English in college. He was by far my best high school teacher.
I learned so much (and still remember some ) in his Literature, Advanced Composition and Speech classes. We learned a saying by Walt Whitman that I can still quote.

I remember him dancing up and down the aisles chanting "different from, different from, different from, from, from". Thus I will never say "different than". Mr. Stahler was different from many of us. Patient, smart, able to explain difficult concepts, encouraging when he identified a student's weaknes. I do not want to be different from him...
Best wishes to his family and friends. Grief can clench hearts. Go easy!
Sally Kentch (he taught me composition, literature and speech)

Brian Stahler is singularly responsible for my success in my career. I’m happy to have been able to tell him that. I’m so sad to hear of the loss of one of the greatest human beings that ever graced this earth. Godspeed and lots of love and appreciation.

I was saddened to read of Mr. Stahlers passing. I enjoyed going to his English literature everyday. When he read Shakespeare or other writers he would have my full attention. One of my memories is our class going to Lycoming College and watching the play Hamlet. He would make his class interesting to attend. When he played Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, and then had us interpret the lines of what we thought they were telling us. I always spoke highly of Mr. Stahler and of him being my favorite high teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
