Obituary of Jeanne M. Almquist
Jeanne M. (Millar) Almquist, age 87, of New Preston, CT, died on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, PA. Born on May 12, 1921 in Hoboken, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Samuel D.B. Millar and Louise (Bonynge) Millar. Jeanne was married to the late John A. Almquist, who taught American literature at Montclair High School, Montclair State College, and Kent School, and who was a jazz musician. Jeanne was a long-time resident of Montclair, NJ. From 1940 to 1945, she worked as the only woman jewelry designer at Cartier in New York City. Seven generations of Jeannes family enjoyed summers on Lake Waramaug, where she and her husband settled after 1968. Jeanne was involved with her community as a member of the Warren (CT) Inland Wetlands Commission for many years. Jeanne is survived by her son, the Hon. John Jeffrey Almquist, a superior court judge for Santa Cruz, CA, and his wife, Julie; her daughter, Jennifer Almquist, a writer and photographer, and son-in-law Tom Fahsbender of New Preston, CT; one brother, Samuel D.B. Millar, Jr., of Camden, ME and one sister, Carol Forstmann of Milton, CT; four grandchildren: Sarah A. Anderson, Christina A. Schell, Captain Sam Almquist, M.D., John A. Almquist, and one great-grandson, Aengus J. Anderson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Adam Justin Almquist and a brother, William H.B. Millar, who served on the USS Intrepid and was a test pilot for Chance Vought Aircraft. She was also predeceased by her dear friend, Sean, and survived by her loving friends Brogan and Josie. Arrangements for services will be made at a future date.
