Jim was a dedicated employee and friend. Always the ultimate chef for a pig roast or a deep fried turkey for the staff Christmas party. If anyone ever needed to know anything about any one of the 150 state forest lease camps, Jim could tell you without having to go to the file cabinet. His work and his volunteer efforts will be missed, but his footprint will stay forever.

Over 47 years ago when I moved to Middlebury Center I met Jim Ryan. Along with Fremont Preble there was a good chance if you saw one of us the other two were around somewhere. Firefighting, wood cutting, hunting, fishing, Christmas caroling (he sang the boom boom boom part in Silver Bells) and yes - I know it is hard to believe - even beer drinking. We were good enough friends that I got him to wear a tuxedo and be in my wedding, even though he almost caused a fistfight with the tailor when we were getting fitted by calling it reading (like a book) rather than Reading (the city where we were).
Even though we drifted apart we remained friends and I will miss him.
