I met Dan Camp several years ago, when he began buying firewood from me. We loaded his truck, talked a few minutes. He was enlarging the basement of his house, and he asked if I needed any clean fill. I said sure, thanks. Next time he came to buy another face cord of oak, he brought a load of clean topsoil, which he'd dug from his basement, loaded onto his Dodge by hand. Good topsoil, no debris, few stones, I needed only level it with a rake, compact with truck, good to go. Over the next few months, whenever Dan bought firewood, he brought more fill, and we usually spent a few minutes catching up a little, having a laugh.
When I stopped selling firewood, I lost touch with a lotta regulars I'd enjoyed talking with, and Dan was one. He drove for Keck's last I knew, and when I met one of their trucks on the road, I'd think of him, hope all was good with him and his family.
This week, I learned Dan has passed away. I'm sad for all those who love and miss him. I liked Dan, always enjoyed seeing him. He loved his family, and he was a hard worker. Anyone who digs a new basement by hand- That's work. And then he looked for someone who could use the excavated fill, and blessed me with it. These days, thanks to Dan, the little flat between my mailbox and creekbank is level, green, lovely.
I just wanted to share a little story about a good man, and say thank you, Dan.
