Obituary of Clarence May

Clarence "Stub" May died at home on Monday, January 29, 2018, at the age of 85, in the care of his wife and four of his daughters. A student at Troy Area high school, he played the clarinet in the school marching band, and enlisted in the Air Force prior to his 18th birthday. He then served in the Korean War, last as a staff sergeant, whereupon he received an honorable discharge. Following his discharge he married Vivian Inman of Canton, PA, and took up residence in Troy, PA. Clarence and Vivian had one son, Matthew, and four daughters, Beth, Deborah, Virginia, and Rebecca. Clarence had a kind heart and an easy-going disposition, no doubt a result of raising four girls. He was always ready with a smile, or a laugh, or a rhyme. He could strike a conversation with anyone at any time. He made people feel at ease. More than anything else, Clarence loved to spend time with his children and their children. In his younger years, Clarence enjoyed woodcraft and making furniture. He once took up hunting, but gave it up when he realized that he just didn't want to harm any creature. He was a proud Steelers' fan, and also enjoyed watching basketball and college football. On any given year, he could never quite get over losing the shoe to Canton. He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew B. May, in Dec. 2017; his parents, Guy and Eleanor (Wilcox) May of Troy, PA; and his brothers, Eugene, Robert and Glen. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Vivian; his sister, Alta Pearl May, of Troy, PA; four daughters, Beth (Thomas) of Troy, PA, Deborah Harrigan of Erin, NY, Virginia (Holunga) of Livermore, CA, and Rebecca (Rouland) of Clyde, NY. His eight grandchildren include Wendell Thomas Jr., Sarah Gleason, Michele Miller, Ryan Harrigan, Jessica Rouland, Joey May, Marcu Holunga, Saveta Holunga; his four great grandchildren include Levi Thomas, Madalyn Miller, Cameron Gleason, and Lukas Gleason. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at: Berrytown Wesleyan Church, 178 Burt Road, Gillett, PA 16925. A reception will immediately follow the service. We look forward to family and friends coming to celebrate Clarence's life, in addition to his military service.
