Obituary of Bradford W. Read

Bradford Winslow Read, age 87, died February 20, 2016 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY. Born in New York City to parents, Sonia Matilda Majulin and Opie Boyd Peyton Read (both deceased). Brad graduated from Alexandria PA High School May 29, 1947. He then entered Lock Haven University on Sept. 8, 1947, the Army of the U.S. on Nov. 8, 1950 (Signal Military Specialty) and was honorably discharged on Oct. 9, 1952. Upon his discharge from the service, he returned to his education at Lock Haven State Teachers' College. He graduated with a Bachelor in Science degree in Health Education on Jan. 20, 1955 and later with a Master's degree in Administration from Penn State University. He joined the Blossburg PA school system around this time. Brad's interest included all phases of coaching: Soccer (especially), Tennis, Basketball, Baseball, Ice Skating, Football and Gymnastics. On August 18, 1956, he married Joan Mase (daughter of Raymond and Genevieve Mase of Blossburg). In 1957, they relocated to Long Island, New York where he taught and coached at the Lindenhurst High School, then transferred to Syosset High School until he retired in 1984. They then moved back home to PA and built a home in Mansfield, PA and landscaped it (with 2 ponds) and spent numerous hours digging and planting – a favorite hobby. They resided in Mansfield until present. In addition, their love for animals ended up, currently with their "Kids" – 6 dogs and 8 inside birds. Relatives of the deceased are: Charles Mullin and Read Mullin (nephews of Brad) as well as their children, sisters of the wife – Dorothy Jones, Sally Payne, Janet (and Bob) VanNoy, all of Mansfield, PA, plus Carole (and Bob Thomas) of Horseheads, NY. Also, there are numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Sister Carole and her husband, Bob, as well as nieces, Patty Hutcheson (extremely special) of Mansfield and Jeanie Stevens of Tioga. In addition, our neighbor, Ellen Blaise, has been here for us all the time. We cannot give enough thanks to our fantastic Mansfield Ambulance Department for all their care and help during the past 3 years. Do we realize how fortunate we are to have them? Also, the Susquehanna Health Home Care rehab people (Donna) and nurse (Rose) plus several others, as well as the Carleton Rehab in Wellsboro. They, of all, were TOPS! In keeping with the wishes of both Brad and Joan, there will be no formal service. A memorial may be held at a later date. Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 637 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA is assisting the family. www.buckheitfcandcrematory.com.
