I met Harry Boyer eight years ago. A kind and gentle man, Harry was deeply thoughtful. I was always struck by how intellegent he was. Although well into his nineties and his body was failing him, his mind remained intensely sharp. Harry and I had a number of conversations on such topics as war, medicine, God, government and legal issues. His factual knowledge was quite impressive, as was his clarity of thought and conviction. Harry was not afraid of death, and I admired him for that. He was also very caring, as evidenced by his interest in my wife (his niece, Kimberly Bastian LeBlond) and our children. Upon breaking the news of Harry's passing to our 5-year-old son, Gabriel, I happily shared with him that he could treasure the memory that Harry had given Gabriel his very first piece of gum. My son cracked a smile as he remembered experiencing gum for the first time as a three-year-old, thanks to his benevolent Uncle Harry. Most important of all, Harry was a source of happiness to his wife, Diane Bastian. Diane is a dear family member to my wife and children, and is therefore very dear to me. I will be forever grateful for the light that Harry brought into all our lives.
