Obituary of Mary Jane Edgerton
Mary Jane Nellie (Rose) Edgerton of Mansfield, PA passed on to heaven Sunday, February 23, 2014 surrounded by her family, after a four-year battle with cancer. Mary Jane was born June 26, 1940 to Harold and Harriet Rose, and grew up in Tioga, PA. She graduated from Williamson High School in 1958. She earned a BS in Education from Mansfield State College, (Kappa Delta Pi) in 1961, and Master of Education in 1989. She did additional coursework at Marywood University as well. Mary Jane taught in the elementary school in the Elmira City School System from 1961-1963, the Northern Tioga School District from 1963-1967, and in the Southern Tioga School District from 1967-2002. In November 1957 she wed James Edgerton of Mansfield, PA. The next 56 years were filled with a love of family and career. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Mansfield, as well as the Episcopal Church Women (ECW). Mary Jane greatly enjoyed her dogs, her grandchildren, playing golf, traveling, the weekly gathering of Retired Educators for breakfast, and especially following her former students as they progressed through life.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband, James Edgerton; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda L. "Mindy" and Melvin "Mel" Wentzel of Williamsport, PA; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Harry Foster of Tioga, PA; 3 grandchildren, Sara N. Neal, Taylor R. Wentzel, Sadie R. Wentzel; 7 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Harriet L. (Davis) Rose (1997) and Harold C. Rose (2002), and a son, Jeffrey E. Edgerton (2006).
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at St. James Episcopal Church, 18 St. James St., Mansfield, PA. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the church with Rev. Rowena Gibbons officiating. A reception will follow at the Parish House. Burial will be private at Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary Jane?s memory to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital, The SPCA, St. James Episcopal Church, or the Jeffrey Edgerton Scholarship Fund, c/o Elmira Heights School District, 2083 College Ave., Elmira Heights, NY 14903.
